Chutes and Ladders

Growing up I played the board game “Chutes and Ladders.” The premise of the game is to move through the spaces of the board from the bottom to the top. As you progress through the game you hope to land on spaces with ladders to skip squares and avoid the spaces with slides. Each time you land on a space at the top of a Chute, you slide back towards the start. The past couple weeks felt as if I was landing on every slide.

Since Dec 16th I have been off work for a surgery. Being home alone all day, I feel isolated and distanced from reality. I know things will get better. It is just a matter of time. It has provided a chance for my to explore myself, learning about how I handle different emotions. It has been a taxing time, but I will get through.

Not much to really say today. not sure where this post started and where it ended, but there you have it.

What was your favorite childhood game? Leave a comment below.

My Neighbor, My Friend

I am writing this at a time when I would normally be sitting in the midst of a cubicle jungle at work. However, due to unforeseen circumstances I will be off of work for another 4-8 weeks. Don’t worry, I’ll be alright, and someday I’m sure I will talk in more detail about what has been going on, just not yet. Stay Tuned.

Being home all day is not as easy as it sounds. Cabin-fever sets in. Especially during this unseasonably warm weather we have been having this winter in Iowa. Hoping to stave off some of this feeling, my wife, Mother-in-law and I built a fire and sat out by the firepit on our porch.

While we were sitting there my neighbor, Joe, came over and visited as well. Joe is a blessing as a neighbor. Always willing to lend a hand helping me around the house. He will watch our home while we travel, and always has a joke and stories galore.

Joe is probably in his mid 60′s, never been married, has taught college level classes, lived in Ireland, worked on the rail road, and so much more. The amount of stories and knowledge he has about the history and people of Eastern Iowa is massive. Every time I talk with Joe I learn something new about the area.  Joe helps me explore my surroundings. Thanks Joe.

After each chat with Joe, I come away with the feeling that this person should write a book, a memoir, something.

Do you have someone in your life who is an unexpected friend? Or someone who every time you meet you think they should write a book?  Please tell me about them in the comments below.

2012: One Word to Focus On

As 2012 gets started many of us are making resolutions to eat better, exercise more, get organized, Etc.  I have done this in years past only to forget about them or give up, usually by the end of winter. This year I am going to do things a little differently. Several of the people I follow on Twitter have been talking about One Word 365. Basically, you choose one word to be your focus for the year.

I thought about this for the last week or so, and one word settled in my mind. There were small things that popping up that made me realize that is is the word that will be the focal point for the coming 364 days. One piece of inspiration I received was from @Texasindy on Twitter. He tweeted:

Your challenge for today is to try something new.                                                       Heck, that’s your challenge everyday!

The next came as I reread an old email where I used a quote from Mark Twain:

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed

by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.

So throw off the bowlines.

Sail away from the safe harbor.

Catch the trade winds in your sails.

Explore. Dream. Discover.”

My One word for 2012 is: Explore

Throughout the year, I hope to explore new careers, new foods, people, places, ideas, causes. You get the picture. I will occasionally update what new discoveries I am making. Until then please join in the conversation below.

Did you make resolutions this year? If so what are they, or why do you not make resolutions?

2011 Review #1

As 2011 comes to a close, and tomorrow brings the dawn of 2012, I want to thank YOU, my readers, my friends, and my family. I know I have been absent from this blog more than I have been here this year, but who knows what 2012 will bring.

Without further ado, my #1 post for 2011 was about making excuses. Something I am still fighting a hard battle with everyday. take a read and join the conversation.

The Dog Ate My Blog Post

I hope everyone has fun tonight, but stay safe. If you drink, don’t drive. Do the Watermelon crawl. (or call me if you are in CR, I will deliver you safely to your front door.)

2011 Review #2

As we are getting close to ringing in 2012, I am of mixed emotions about what the coming year might bring. In my writing, I strive to always come out as honest as I can about things going on in my life. For those who don’t know, I have been off of work for the past 2 weeks while recovering from a minor surgery (don’t worry, it went well and I am doing fine). During this time away from my normal day to day routine, I have had a lot of time to think about the upcoming year and years past. I will follow up on some of what has been going on in my head in future posts.

But until then, check out the 2nd most commented on post for 2011 where I talk about how I am a hot mess.

I’m Back, For A Recap

Well 2011 is almost over. I started this blog back in June and posted regularly until August. Then I allowed life and excuses to get in the way of my writing.  As I sit here now looking back on “Course Adjustments” I am thinking about what I want to do differently in 2012. I will post more on that in a few days, but until then I thought over the next 5 days I would reshare the 5 most commented on post of 2011.

Post #5 was about Changes. Rereading the post, I realize that some of the changes i talked about have stuck. I had given up running for a while but have been back at it recently. (I have had to stop for the last 2 weeks while recovering from a minor surgery.) I have gone back to my natural hair color, but I am still finding my style.

Check out the post or leave a comment here.

And stay tuned for new things to come in 2012.

Missing in Action?

Aside

Wow, my posting has been virtually nonexistent the last few weeks. I was just looking over my blog and realized that I haven’t posted a “real”post in 10+ day.  No excuses. I have chosen not to write.  Over the last few days, I have spent some good time with my wife. we went to a movie, hung out at home and watched a few more. Also I have been mostly staying up with my running  I am on week 7 day 3 of the C25k program and have only missed 1 day.   These are the good highlights.

So there you have it.  I have CHOSEN to not write recently.  I do however have a post in the works the goes more in depth about what has been going on recently on the flip side.

What’s been going on in your world?

Weekly Review

This is the next installment of sharing I have read that this week that has resonated with me. This was supposed to come out on Wednesday, but due to some changes in my internet access was delayed until today. Things are a little off as to my posting schedule. These posts will cross a wide variety of subject matter and will be things the piqued my interest, challenged my thinking, feel good stories I enjoyed, or whatever else I stumble upon and want to share. So without further ado, here’s what I have found over the past week or so:

Rodin's "The Thinker" courtesy of Wikipedia

How I’m Fighting Information Overload” contains some great tips that I am going to try to implement. Social Media and the internet in general have been pulling a Lestat on my time. A nice post by @tonyjalicea

In another interesting post, @NateStPierre writes about being more that just a time waster in the blogosphere. Why Your Blog Doesn’t Matter really got me for its maps though.

Looking to volunteer with the Red Cross?  I am thinking about it.  They are having classes in the CR/IC area in September. Want to join me? Here are the details.

The last post features @adampaulrico making a repeat appearance. Again posting in a guest post on Adam writes “How to Overcome a Quarter-Life Crisis and Find Your Dream Job.

Please take a moment to post in the comments.

What are you reading this week?  What do you think of the posts I shared?
